Research & Planning Essay
In my AS year, the task I was told to complete was to create
a music magazine, based on the music genre of my choice; which was Hip Hop/Rap.
The conventions of this kind of genre of magazines were deep, dark colours,
making everything appear grimy and rough. For my A2 task, I had to create a
horror trailer, and also construct a horror magazine and film poster in the
process, which links in to what I did during my AS year. For both of these
tasks, a lot of things came from research and planning, which was to look at
other magazines and watch horror trailers and more.
AS and A2 research work included a series of individual
work, which was based upon the subgenres of horror. From my AS year, I can say
that my individual research skills have improved greatly, as in AS I only
looked at one other college magazine that I was given by my teacher for my
preliminary task; and that magazine wasn’t done to high standards, as it by
another student from another school – meaning that my research was very limited
for my preliminary task and no creativity was spurned from it. This is in
contrast to my A2 year, as my research included watching other film trailers
and full length horror films from different subgenres of horror to gain more
ideas for a horror trailer concept. The fact that I looked at different
subgenres of horror meant that I could incorporate different ideas into my
horror trailer, as my research wasn’t limited, which meant I could be more creative
by using existing ideas and mould them into one. This highlights the over the
course of the two years, my research skills have greatly improved.
